Minimum Temperatures Drop Below Freezing in Kashmir and Ladakh

Srinagar, January 8: Kashmir and Ladakh regions woke up to freezing temperatures today as minimum temperatures fell several degrees below zero.

Srinagar recorded a minimum of 4.3°C while Pahalgam was even colder at 5.3°C. Gulmarg, a famous skiing destination saw the mercury drop to 4°C. South Kashmir was the coldest with Shopian recording a bone-chilling -6.4°C and Anantnag at -5.2°C. Kupwara in north Kashmir registered -5°C.

In Ladakh, Leh recorded a minimum of -10.6°C while Kargil was slightly warmer at -8.9°C. Drass was the coldest in the region with the minimum temperature dropping to -11.3°C.

The temperatures are likely to drop further during the night as cold northwesterly winds continue to blow over the regions. People have been advised to take precautions and keep themselves warm to avoid coldrelated ailments. Homeless people are the most vulnerable due to the extreme cold wave conditions.

Meanwhile, minimum temperatures were markedly higher in the Jammu region. Jammu city recorded 4.3°C while Banihal was coldest at -1.2°C. Other areas like Batote, Katra, Kathua and Samba saw minimums around 3-5°C.

The Meteorological Department has forecast the cold wave to continue for another 23 days after which minimum temperatures are expected to rise by 2-3 degrees. People are advised to stay indoors as much as possible and keep warm.–(Kashmir Bulletin)
